Accredited by the CSWE, the Social Work Department along with the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology is housed within the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. The Social Work Department confers BSSW and MSW degrees, and with the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, jointly offers a PhD degree in Social Welfare. The doctoral program prepares students for leadership roles in the field as instructors, researchers, program designers and policy advocates. The MSW program emphasizes both direct and macro practice methods, offering state-recognized programming in substance abuse counseling and school social work along with campus-recognized interdisciplinary certificates in applied gerontology, trauma-informed care, and nonprofit management.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), Wisconsin’s major public urban research university, provides a comprehensive liberal arts and professional education at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is one of only two doctoral-granting campuses in the University of Wisconsin System. UWM was designated an R-1 Doctoral University – Highest Research Activity, by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Of the 131 universities designated as R-1, UWM is among a minority located in an urban setting and one of only 10 with a dedicated urban access mission. Additionally, UWM was designated by the Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification in 2015 for its significant work in Milwaukee and Wisconsin’s southeast region. The campus is also home to the state’s largest collaboration of health sciences, social work, nursing and public health programs through its Partners for Health initiative.
