About the Role:

Swiss Re is one of the world's leading providers of reinsurance and insurance. Through our branch operations in Canada, our Reinsurance Business Unit covers both Property & Casualty and Life & Health and our Corporate Solutions Unit provides commercial insurance to clients.

The Canadian tax team at Swiss Re is responsible for tax compliance, reporting and advisory for our insurance and reinsurance branches in Canada.

About the Team:

The Canadian tax team is part of a global tax team supporting Swiss Re operations in Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA.

Tax compliance includes the preparation and submission of income tax returns, transfer pricing documentation, and dealing with issues and responding to questions on income tax, international and GST/HST government audits. For income tax returns, the Canadian team receives preparation support from our Group Tax Operations (GTO) team in Bratislava, while our Canadian GST/HST returns are prepared by a central indirect tax team located throughout Europe; the Canadian tax team is responsible for reviewing these returns and to ensure all compliance requirements are met. Tax reporting includes the quarterly preparation of IFRS and US GAAP tax provisions and tax projections for capital forecasting. Tax advisory includes tax planning and responding to ad hoc tax queries from internal stakeholders.

The tax function at Swiss Re is undergoing evolution as a result of new tax technology, which key in respect to tax compliance and reporting. The Senior Tax Manager has a key part in helping to implement this new technology, which will provide the Canadian team more opportunity to focus on higher value-added tax planning and advisory activities and enhanced stakeholder management.

Job Responsibilities
  • Work with the investment, finance, and other teams as necessary to prepare and file income tax returns for our Canadian P&C and Life insurance branches; calculate Canadian Investment Fund amounts; prepare and maintain income tax working papers electronically and manage electronic files in an organized manner
  • Obtain and assess intercompany financial data for Forms T106 ("Information Returns of Non-Arm's Length Transactions with Non-Residents") for our Canadian P&C and Life insurance branches; prepare and file the forms
  • Work with local stakeholders to review and update the business analysis section of our transfer pricing reports
  • Review GST/HST tax working papers prepared by GTO; coordinate with the central indirect tax team and GTO to ensure that the indirect tax filings are complete and include the relevant supporting schedules; file the returns
  • Prepare and file any required Non-Resident Tax Returns, including the NR4 Summary and NR4 Slips
  • Prepare Canadian excise tax returns for our direct P&C insurance business
  • Work with actuarial, finance, and other teams as necessary to prepare quarterly IFRS tax provisions for Canadian and Swiss regulatory reporting; prepare working papers, draft and update tax note disclosures, prepare vouchers, and reconcile tax balances
  • Work with GTO, actuarial, finance, and other teams as necessary to prepare/review quarterly US GAAP tax provisions for public reporting; identify IFRS-to-US GAAP differences, prepare working papers, draft and update tax note disclosures, prepare vouchers, and reconcile tax balances
  • Review quarterly Economic Value Management (EVM) tax provisions prepared by GTO
  • Perform a current tax and deferred tax true-up analysis comparing book-to-tax differences for IFRS and US GAAP
  • Prepare projections for cash flow, effective tax rate, and other tax analyses for the Group Tax Reporting team
  • Maintain cash tax balances, including the computation of instalment requirements for income taxes and indirect taxes, preparing monthly requisitions, and submitting payment to tax authority
  • Perform tax research for income tax, indirect tax and tax accounting issues
  • Support with tax audit efforts with the Canada Revenue Agency and other authorities
  • Provide assistance for special projects and transactions, and support scenario modelling and analysis
  • Support the introduction of new tax technology; work with IT teams to provide tax requirements, perform user testing, and facilitate implementation; recommend applications for tax technology to simplify tasks and increase efficiency

About You:

Qualifications and Skills
  • CPA, MTAX, ortax technical experience with a large accounting firm
  • 3+ years direct income tax experience
  • Completion of the CICA In-Depth Tax Course or MTAX program
  • Knowledge of the Life and P&C business, US GAAP, IFRS 17 and IAS 12 is an asset
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Tax Prep; experience with SAP a plus
