Role Summary

The Vice President, Tax is responsible for developing organization tax strategy and administering all of UPMC's tax affairs, so they are in compliance with federal, state, local, and/or foreign tax laws. The Vice President, Tax is responsible for assuring that: (1) the tax cost of doing business is minimized, (2) all required tax returns are accurately and timely filed and (3) the tax related information on the statutory and GAAP financial statements are properly reported.  The Vice President, Tax is responsible for filing federal, state and local income, ad valorem, franchise, and other informational tax returns. The Vice President, Tax also assists corporate and operational senior management in evaluating major initiatives, such as mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, including the overall impact to the organization from a tax strategy perspective.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic tax solutions consistent with business objectives and in compliance with applicable tax laws.
  • Direct and review preparation of quarterly GAAP tax provisions.
  • Partner with system-wide teams in developing and implementing tax strategies as well as tax efficient solutions to business issues.
  • Maintain a superior and specialized knowledge of federal, state and local tax laws to accomplish principal responsibilities including the relationship between the affiliated tax-exempt and for-profit entities.
  • Ensure the proper tax accounting (GAAP and statutory financial reporting of taxes), including the recognition and coordination of the book and tax effects of transactions.
  • Implement special initiatives supporting the Tax department which may include earnings and profits studies, tax basis studies, transfer pricing studies, and tax accounting process improvements.
  • Lead the analysis of tax positions to be taken by the organization which includes research and writing of position statements.

Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline required.
  • CPA, Master's Degree in Taxation, MBA and/or JD preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of combined public accounting firm and industry tax experience required.
  • Deep understanding and application of U.S. tax laws as well as experience with international tax laws required; non-profit tax experience preferred.
